But just because some things were said in measured tones doesn&#8217;t mean all that was said was necessarily true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One particular item that caught my ear was Senator Vance&#8217;s assertion that, &#8220;25 million illegal aliens competing with Americans for scarce homes is one of the most significant drivers of home prices in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/10\/01\/us\/factcheck-walz-vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> fact checked this<\/a>: &#8220;Economists and real estate experts say that while migration, including illegal immigration, has contributed to population growth and thus demand for housing, it is not a main driver behind the country\u2019s housing affordability crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean, there were several other exaggerations and outright falsehoods, but this fits the unfortunately proven technique of using immigrants as scapegoats to win votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the thing is, for Michigan, more immigration (secure, legal, humanely processed immigration) would actually be a cure for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganpublic.org\/economy\/2024-09-30\/michigan-reaches-highest-employment-level-in-more-than-two-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many of our challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think the consensus on the Vice Presidential debate was that it was startlingly civil.
