Unlike, say, the UK’s parliamentary system where the executive leader (the prime minister) is also the leader of his/her political party, our system is set up so the executive leader (the president, or in the case of a state, the governor) is merely a member of the party. So our executive doesn’t necessarily have obligations to narrowly follow the party line. This is a good thing. Unless you’re a Republican legislator in Michigan and you want your damn Republican governor to narrowly follow your damn party line….
