Obama and Edwards Sitting in a Tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G…
Originally published in the Grand Rapids Business Journal, May 19, 2008
As it happens, John Edwards came to a Barack Obama rally in downtown Grand Rapids to announce his endorsement of Candidate Obama. It was a big, big deal …for maybe a day or two and then on to the next news cycle. That’s the way it is. Nobody really cares anymore. I mean, honestly, right now, two weeks later, do you care what John Edwards thinks? So I had to come up with a comic that could live beyond a 24-hour expiration date.
Fortunately for me, racism and homophobia have a shelf life measured by carbon dating. (Just goes to prove that editorial cartoonists sometimes have a very twisted view of what “fortunate” is.) And while it is true that West Michigan has historically been inhospitable territory for the Democratic Party, the current Republican Party has screwed up conservatism so badly in this century that this might not be recognized as true come the fall elections. So I was compelled to trot out this generally held belief before it gets taken away from me.
Gotta run. Lots of work to do before the Pistons game tonight. I hate the Boston Celtics. At least I’ll always have that….

Dude – what’s with the hate? Larry Bird and the old Boston Garden are history man. The Celtics haven’t seen hope in a long time while the Pistons have been the b-ball gold standard. I stayed up beyond even Anna’s bedtime watching the game on Wed. I love to watch Billups and Prince and Wallace and Rick (face mask guy) play – and that Stuckey fellow is a keeper. I hadn’t watched a game in a long time – it’s such a 3 point contest anymore.
You know the NBA and advertisers want a Lakers/Celtics series. There will endless references to Bird and Magic and east/west coast rivalries and so many celebrities! Which team will Obama and Clinton support?!
I have to cheer on the Celtics but it wouldn’t break my heart to see the Pistons win…

Yeah, maybe hate is too strong a work. How about despise? Is despise any better?
Actually, a lot of it this year is transfered anger from the NBA. Their unabashed woody for a Celtics/Lakers series just steams me. No acknowledgment of the continued excellence of Dumars’ Pistons. Only pining for the glory days in the late 80s when Bird and Magic ruled the courts and — wait — didn’t the Pistons win a couple of titles back then? Huh. Must’ve forgotten about that….
Good Lord, this is turning into a sports blog! Can the grade-school insults and rampant misspellings be far behind?!
